BTEC - National Extended Certificate in Sport

Course Overview

The BTEC Extended Certificate in Sport is a vocational qualification designed for students interested in pursuing a career in the sports industry. It is equivalent to one A Level and provides a blend of theoretical and practical learning. The course covers core topics such as Anatomy and Physiology, Fitness Training and Programming, and Professional Development in the Sports Industry. Students will also complete one optional unit, of Sports Leadership.

This qualification supports progression to higher education courses in sports science, coaching, or physical education, as well as employment or apprenticeships in the sport and leisure sectors. The course encourages personal development, teamwork, and communication, preparing students for real-world experiences in a dynamic and growing industry.

How is the course assessed?

Assessment is through a combination of external exams, controlled assessments, practical video evidence and internally assessed coursework, promoting a range of academic and practical skills.

External Mandatory Units (exam):

  • Unit 1: Anatomy and Physiology

  • Unit 2: Fitness Training and Programming for Health, Sport and Wellbeing.

Internal Mandatory Unit (Coursework):

  • Unit 3: Careers in the sports industry

Internal Optional unit:
