Curriculum Intent

The Travel and Tourism department aims to provide our students with the skills and knowledge essential for thriving in the dynamic travel and tourism industry.  By exploring diverse destinations and understanding the importance of customer service students will develop practical, real world insights.  We aim to ensure that all our students develop the necessary skills and knowledge to progress on to further education or entry-level positions. To achieve our aims we ensure we provide a curriculum that meets the needs of all our learners and set the highest standards and expectations. We encourage all our students to be the best that they can be.

Key Stage 4 / GCSE

The BTEC Tech Award in Travel and Tourism is delivered at key stage 4.  This is a two year course equivalent to one GCSE.  The course is comprised of three components.  Two components are assessed through a controlled conditions assessment and the third unit is assessed via an exam.  This is a Pearson qualification, the following link will enable access to further information about the course, including the specification: https://qualifications.pearson.com/en/qualifications/btec-tech-awards/travel-and-tourism-2022.html

Year 10

Component 1 composite elements:

  • The major components of the UK travel and tourism industry

  • The ownership and aims of travel and tourism organisations and how they work together

  • The role of consumer technology in travel and tourism

  • Visitor destinations

  • Different types of travel and tourism activities

  • Popularity of destinations with different visitor types

  • Travel options to access tourist destinations

  • Modes of transport, hubs and routes

Component 2 composite elements:

  • Types of market research

  • How travel and tourism organisations may use market research to identify customer needs and preferences

  • How travel and tourism organisations may use research to identify travel and tourism trends

  • Customer needs and preferences

  • How travel and tourism organisations provide different products and services to meet customer needs and preferences

  • Customer needs and different types of travel

  • Travel planning to meet customer needs and preferences


Year 11

Component 3 composite elements:

  • Factors influencing global travel and tourism

  • Response to factors

  • Possible impacts of tourism

  • Sustainable tourism

  • Managing sociocultural impacts

  • Managing economic impacts

  • Managing environmental impacts

  • Tourism development

  • The role of local and national governments in tourism development

  • The importance of partnerships in destination management

Extra-curricular

After school support is offered to both year groups throughout the academic year to help students maximise their coursework grades and prepare them for the exam component.
